Autonomous drones and robots can now be created by other machines

MIT researchers, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, have developed a system that almost takes the human factor out of the equation, allowing the creation of autonomous drones and robots directly to the 3D printer.

Reminiscent of the Terminator movie series, the installation called suggestive LaserFactory it is even more efficient than the fully automated factories illustrated in the famous SF series. Instead of an army of specialized robots, manufacturing is centered around a two-stage laser tool. It all starts with a software package containing the necessary instructions for assembling the finished product, complete with a selection of materials, electronic circuits and mechanical elements.

Designers can select from a list the components they need and define the electrical circuit paths, compiling the final product in the application connected to the LaserFactory installation.

Remarkably, drones manufactured using LaserFactory are activated and ready for use immediately.

MIT engineers describe several possibilities and practical applications for LaserFactory creations, such as quick assembly of even more drones, ready to use in applications that involve parcel delivery and rescue.

The next step involves further improving the system, facilitating the construction of more sophisticated autonomous robots than is currently possible, avoiding the involvement of the human factor as much as possible. The team also intends to look for ways to expand the LaserFactory to create more three-dimensional shapes, perhaps by using a 3D printer
