Autárquicas: JSD leader will be candidate against Isaltino Morais in Oeiras – Elections

The PSD candidate for the Oeiras City Council will be the leader of JSD, Alexandre Poço, today announced Rui Rio, who justified the decision by understanding that the Social Democrats had to present their own list in a municipality of this size.

In the “Grande Interview”, conducted by Vítor Gonçalves and broadcast on RTP3, Rio recalled that the local structures had defended that the PSD should not present any list and support the current president and former PSD activist, Isaltino Morais (in the photo), decision now thwarted by the party’s Standing Committee.

“We decided that the PSD could not fail to present, for the first time, a candidate in the tenth largest municipality in terms of population and that, in economic terms, it is certainly above the tenth,” he justified.

As for the choice of the 28-year-old deputy, citizen of Oeiras, and leader of JSD, Rio explained it as a “future” bet in an election in which the party must have “an honorable presence”.

“The last thing I am is hypocritical: winning Oeiras to Isaltino Morais is not an impossibility, but it is very difficult (…) We are going to compete on a different level, we are going to give Oeiras a solution in the future,” he said.

In the interview, Rio was challenged to justify some of the party’s autarchic choices, such as Suzana Garcia’s for Amadora, having admitted that he never spoke to the candidate until today, but said he didn’t think he had “a speech close to Chega”.

“Style is one thing, what matters here is the thought. When the Prime Minister says that I chose Senhora do Chega, he knows that he is lying: Dr. Suzana Garcia was invited by Chega and both times he said no and when she was invited by the PSD she said yes “, she said.

Despite not agreeing that the lawyer has a speech close to Chega, Rio acknowledged that the expression she used to refer to political opponents, “exterminate”, is “a brutal word”, linked to the Holocaust, and that she would never use it.

“Do you think someone in the 21st century in Portugal is thinking such a thing? It was not the best word, but what she meant is that she wants Chega and BE to have such a defeat that they disappear from the political scene”, he said, adding that the articles he read from the candidate are “very well written and show a very good cultural background”.

Rio again defended that “each municipality has its own characteristics” and repeated that its place will be at stake in the next municipalities.

“When there are elections, the party president’s place is always at stake (…) in this one, maybe a little more, because I am the one who is taking responsibility,” he said.

Without wanting to set a bar on the number of cameras to be won by the PSD that can be considered a good result, the PSD leader left a ‘message’ to his opponents. “People who are not too disturbed, can be sure that I will be demanding with me”, he assured.

Asked if, as António Costa recently defended, if he is getting closer to the right, Rio was categorical: “No, no and no. Not three times”. “The only thing I could have done to say that is the fact that, with the autonomy that they have in the Azores, they accepted to make a regional government that in the regional parliament is supported by two votes from Chega, and I agree, I think that there is no problem “, he said.

Regarding his participation, for the first time, in the convention of the Europe and Freedom Movement (MEL) at the end of May, the PSD leader assured that before accepting the invitation he asked who would be present.

“There are a lot of people connected to the PS. If there weren’t a lot of people connected to the PS, I wouldn’t go (…) If it was something so far to the right that the most left was me, then I wouldn’t,” he said.
