Audio maker Sennheiser to abandon consumer division

Bad news for fans of Sennheiser audio equipment: the manufacturer has just announced in a press release its intention to no longer deal with its consumer unit. Andreas Sennheiser, one of the two co-CEOs says:

We are focusing our own resources on the three areas of activity of the Professional division and are looking for a solid partner to invest in our Consumer activity.

Sennheiser said discussions would start soon, but did not release names of potential partners. It is also not known what the nature of this partnership will be: a co-investment, a license of the brand as is currently done by Marshall, or a complete sale of the consumer part.

The German manufacturer currently has four units: Pro Audio, Business Communications, Neumann and Consumer Electronics. Neumann is a manufacturer of equipment for audio recording, for example microphones. Sennheiser began its audio business in 1945. In addition to the general public, its products are aimed at recording studios, concert halls, auditoriums and conference rooms.

This announcement will disappoint many customers because Sennheiser enjoys a very good brand image in the field of headphones, in particular with its excellent Momentum. The manufacturer has made a timid entry into the highly competitive market for true wireless headphones, dominated by Apple, with its Momentum True Wireless.

For the manufacturer, the market for headphones and soundbars offers strong growth potential, in particular in the field of true wireless headphones. But Sennheiser believes he can’t win the game on his own.
