Audi has unveiled the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron, its first electric models in the compact SUV category. Extremely impressive in appearance and feel, extremely spacious inside and with innovative solutions in control, handling, screens and driver assistance systems. The augmented reality head-up screen connects the virtual with the real world in a whole new way.
The range includes three engine versions, led by a quattro model with a maximum power of 220 kW (299 PS). Charging time of about ten minutes provides enough power to cover about 130 km (WLTP). The rear-wheel drive Q4 40 e-tron achieves a range of up to 520 km on the WLTP cycle. Sales of the model in Europe begin in June.
With the Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron, Audi takes the next step in the design language of its electric models, bringing to production the prototypes it introduced in early 2019. Impressive proportions with short headlights, large wheels and dynamically accentuated, clean lines. In the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, the ultra-low coupe-shaped roofline ends in a sporty rear end, with the spoiler mounted deep in the two-part window. The progressive and modern design is typical of Audi, both functional and aerodynamic: The Q4 e-tron achieves a drag coefficient of 0.28 while the Sportback reaches an even lower value, with a drag coefficient of 0.26.
Optionally available Matrix LED headlights always illuminate the street as brightly as possible without disturbing other road users. In a world first, the driver can choose between four car lighting signatures from the MMI touch system. At the back, a strip of light connects the luminaires to each other. The models are offered in eight different colors, including the new metallic shade aurora. The equipment versions are the basic and the advanced and S line.
The two models are distinguished for their great autonomy. The Q4 40 e-tron has a range of up to 520 km (WLTP) with a single battery charge. Thanks to the maximum charging capacity of 125 kW, in ideal conditions it can charge enough power to travel about 130 km (WLTP). Using the myAudi application, the owner can control the charging remotely or the air conditioning, from his smartphone.
New ideas for a new era: the interior and the function
The interior of the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron is extremely spacious and airy. The instrument panel, facing the driver, incorporates two screens, which are simultaneously design elements. The decorative upholstery on the passenger side is optionally available with an innovative “artificial fabric” containing a percentage of recycled materials. A separate horizontal panel has the gear selector lever. Seat upholstery containing large quantities of recycled polyester is available for the sporty S-Series interior. Approximately 26 recycled 1.5 liter PET bottles are used for each seat.
Also completely new is the steering wheel with seamless touch surfaces, used by the driver to control the digital instrument panel. Infotainment and navigation mainly work using the central MMI touch screen, which will also be available in 11.6 inches by the end of the year. Physical voice control provides the third functional interface.
Optionally, the Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron can be equipped with another major innovation – the augmented reality head-up display. Displays information provided by some of the driver assistance systems and real-world navigation symbols in the driver’s field of vision. This information is displayed dynamically in a wide space, where it appears as a floating image at a distance of about ten meters or more from the driver – creating a fascinating result.
Fully digital: the Q4 e-tron is an electronic mobility device
The Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron offer a fully digital user experience. The entertainment package in the electric compact SUV is structured in three levels – from MMI to MMI plus to MMI pro. Various features are available depending on the configuration level, including the augmented reality head-up display and the Audi virtual cockpit plus. Optional levels provide Audi connect online services, including intelligent e-tron route planning to optimize route taking into account public charging infrastructure. Premium sound is provided by a new partner especially popular with the new generations of high fidelity audio friends – the Sonos sound system that combines lifestyle, technology and design in a new dimension.
Battery, drive and charge options
It is very important that the Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron meet and meet the expectations of very different groups of customers – from the urban mainly to the travelers. Two battery versions and three power versions available. The compact battery for the Q4 35 e-tron has a net energy capacity of 52 kWh (55 kWh gross), while the prices for the large battery in the Q4 40 e-tron and Q4 50 e-tron quattro are 77 (82) kWh.
The Q4 35 e-tron and Q4 40 e-tron have an electric motor that drives the rear wheels, with outputs of 125 kW (170 PS) and 150 kW (204 PS) respectively. The top version Q4 50 e-tron quattro has two electric motors for electric quattro. They offer a maximum power of 220 kW (299 PS), which ensures acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 6.2 seconds and electronically limited top speed of 180 km / h. For greater energy efficiency, the engine on the front axle is only started when high power or strong traction is required. Another important factor in energy savings while driving is smart retrieval, which also incorporates navigation and topographic data.
Audi’s two new electric SUVs can be charged at different power levels using alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) depending on the battery. The compact battery can reach up to 7.4 kW with AC charging and up to 100 kW when using HPC (high power charging) with direct current. By default, the larger battery allows up to 11 kW with AC and up to 125 kW with HPC.
Intelligent connectivity: suspension and driver assistance systems
The high-voltage battery of the Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron is positioned between the axles, ensuring a low center of gravity and a balanced mass distribution. Motion and suspension control systems work closely together – compact electric SUVs are safe, sporty and comfortable to drive at the same time.
Driver assistance systems
Compact electric SUVs have many driver assistance systems as standard. These include predictive efficiency assist, which supports a driving style that optimizes energy consumption. Optional systems – like many other equipment features – are divided into packages. The highlight is adaptive cruise assist, which assists the driver with longitudinal and lateral guidance across the entire speed range. Surround view cameras are an extremely great help when driving in the city and when parking.
Introduction to the summer market: prices and publishing models
The Audi Q4 e-tron will hit European markets early this summer, with Sportback models coming to an end. The proposed retail prices in the Greek market will be announced shortly before the launch of the model.
