Athletes of SOCHIN karate club brought medals from the WKF Latvian Karate Championship


On September 10, the WKF (World Karate Federation) Latvian Karate Championship took place in Salaspils.

The Latvian Championship was held on 3 tatami in two categories,

  • KATA (demonstrations) and
  • KUMITE (fights).

Refereeing at the Championship was carried out by experienced judges from Latvia and Estonia.

SOCHIN karate club (coaches Sergei Ivanko, Alisa Ivanko) at the Championship was represented by a team of 11 athletes.

The head coach Sergei Ivanko was in the judiciary at the Championship.

The results of the Latvian Championship are as follows:

  • Denis Kuranov in fights in the category up to 67 kg took 2nd place.
  • Mikhail Sazonov in KATA, 0.2 points were missing before reaching the final, as a result, 3rd place.
  • Anastasia Trofimova in fights up to 56 kg won 3rd place,
  • Veronika Novikova she performed well in the fights. Didn’t qualify for the final, but won bronze.
  • Nicole Ishkulova has been practicing karate relatively recently, but showing good technique, she was enrolled in the Championship as part of the club’s team and showed herself remarkably in fights – 3rd place (bronze).

The rest of the athletes gained invaluable experience of playing against strong opponents.

Vladislav Valainis and Vestur Gradkovsky in fights they hit the leaders and, unfortunately, lost in fights for bronze. With excellent potential performed well Kirill Deryuginbut was left without a medal. Sofia Nekrasha Possessing a good punching technique, but with little experience in participating in competitions, she has so far remained without an award. Evgeny Niedra and Nikita Katakina also lacked combat experience on the tatami.

In the medal standings among 24 clubs in Latvia, SOCHIN took 15th place. All performing athletes for the performance at the Latvian Championship were prepared by the coach Alisa Ivanko.
