Small surprise, Asus ROG takes advantage of this CES 2021 to announce a new ultra portable dedicated to gamers but which we can especially complete with a full eGPU.
We didn’t necessarily dream of it but Asus did and now we clearly dream of it. Asus has just announced its brand new ROG Flow X13, an ultra-thin laptop for gamers with a hinge of 360° and can therefore adopt any position for the consumption of content. The ROG Flow X13 weighs only 1.3kg for a thickness of 15.8mm. With an AMD Ryzen Mobile processor and a GPU that can go up to a GeForce GTX 1650, we may wonder if it is not a bit light to qualify as a gaming laptop. This is where the ROG XG Mobile, an external box that not only acts as an external hub for connections but also as an external graphics card. Disappointed with Thunderbolt 4, Asus has developed its own connectivity to allow seamless use when the ROG Flow X13 is docked.
Let’s go back for a moment to the ROG Flow X13 with in its entrails a CPU AMD Ryzen Mobile new generation, up to 32GB of LPDDR4X-4266 RAM which consumes 50% less energy compared to conventional DDR4 and which takes up to 46% less space on the motherboard and up to 1TB in SSD. It is therefore an ultra-portable laptop with a 13-inch screen in 16:10 format and Pantone certified. The screen offers 4K definition at 60Hz or Full HD at 120Hz. The whole thing is only 15.8mm thick for a weight of 1.3kg on the scale. The user still has a dedicated graphics card up to the GeForce GTX 1650. It is clearly not the most powerful but it will easily run any multimedia content and especially indie games in peace. And finally, there is a compatible USB-C port DisplayPort 1.4, a second USB-C port, an HDMI 2.0b output, a USB-A port, a jack and charging via USB-C and according to Asus, the ROG Flow X13 offers a battery life of 10 hours in video mode.
But what to do when you need more power to run CyberPunk 2077 for example? This is where the ROG XG Mobile comes into play, an eGPU with proprietary connectivity to Asus and which, according to the Taiwanese manufacturer, is faster than the Thunderbolt 4, which ensures seamless use and what did not support eGPUs in Thunderbolt 3 until now. We are talking about a bandwidth of 63GBps. The ROG XG Mobile comes in the form of an external box weighing 1 kg with in addition 4 USB-A ports, an SD / SDXC port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.0a output and a Display output Port 1.4. The whole thing is powered by 280W to manage the ROG XG Mobile and the ROG Flow X13. Finally, the ROG XG Mobile integrates a new generation Nvidia GPU GeForce RTX 3xxx from Nvidia.
Count from 1799 euros for ROG Flow X13 from the end of January and from 1499 euros for the ROG XG Mobile scheduled for this first quarter of 2021.
