Asthma complaints may increase in humid weather

Winter mornings, cold and foggy, humid air are not good for asthmatics. During the heating season, the humidity in the apartments can also rise. Edit Dr. Hidvégi pulmonologist, doctor of the Lung Center, said that this can be a problem in the case of asthma for several reasons.

Such symptoms can occur from humid air

Humidity indicates how much moisture is in the air. High humidity can directly irritate the airways, but it can also increase the amount of other irritants in the air, such as air pollution. Inhaling humid air is therefore clearly not ideal for asthmatics. This can be indicated by the increasing symptoms of the asthma patient: wheezing, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest and coughing.

Steam outside and inside

High humidity does not only make life difficult for patients outdoors. In the winter months, we spend more time indoors, in the apartment, and we ventilate less often, so the humidity of the indoor air can rise significantly. This also causes problems in many newly built, well-insulated apartments. In the long term, high humidity favors the appearance of allergens inside the apartment – mold and dust mites – which pose an additional risk: the presence and inhalation of allergens can also increase asthma symptoms.

This is how we can maintain our sense of well-being

It is worth following the humidity data in the daily weather report. In case of high values, we try to minimize the time spent outdoors. We measure the humidity of the indoor air with a suitable device. If it permanently shows a value above 40-50%, try to reduce the humidity. We can prevent the consequences of high humidity with a few minutes of intensive ventilation, or with a modern ventilation unit built into the door or window, or by using a dehumidifier.

See a doctor in time!

Increasing humidity can cause worsening symptoms even in the case of well-adjusted, previously symptom-free asthmatics. If you notice that the symptoms are getting worse, consult a pulmonologist, don’t wait until you have to use the anti-seizure medication more and more often, and it’s not worth risking the development of an asthma attack either!
