“Ask consumers to ‘do not order’” Baemin Rider, 2nd strike on Buddha’s Birthday (27th)

‘Baemin Riders’ (Baedal People’s deliverymen) demand an increase in the basic delivery fee and go on strike on the 27th, the birthday of Buddha following the last holiday, Children’s Day.

On the morning of the 26th, the Korea Confederation of Trade Union Service Federation Delivery Platform Labor Union held a press conference in front of Baemin headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and announced a one-day strike on the 27th, saying, “Labor and management resumed negotiations on the 23rd, but the management came out with a plan with no progress.”

He added, “We also ask consumers to ‘order strikes’.” Consumers also asked for a ‘boycott’ on this day.

They are demanding that the basic delivery fee, which has been frozen for 9 years, be raised from 3,000 won to 4,000 won.

Previously, some union members and non-union members went on strike for one day on Children’s Day (5th) when collective bargaining with the management finally broke down last month.

The basic delivery fee they are requesting an increase is different from the delivery fee paid by customers. Their argument is that Baemin should increase the rate paid to riders from the 6,000 won delivery fee received from the owner.

The basic delivery fee in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon is 3,000 won, but there is a difference between 2,600 and 2,800 won in other areas.

The union also demanded that riders be paid the same delivery fee as the existing basic delivery fee for ‘thrifty delivery’ (a service that bundles and delivers orders on a similar route) introduced by Baemin last month.

Meanwhile, Hong Chang-ui, chairman of the delivery platform union, and Kim Jeong-hoon, head of the delivery platform union Baemin branch, are on a hunger strike in front of the Baemin headquarters from the 16th to the 11th.
