As part of the main theme, the Vitra Design Museum examines the role of women in the world of design and presents iconic pieces by world authors

Products illustrating the legendary collaboration between Ray and Charles Eames can be seen until May 2022 in the Vitra Schaudepot building. In addition to world-famous authors, the works of young designers will also be on display.

The selection of Designers in the Vitra Design Museum’s collection as the first theme of the year reflects the fact that women’s work, both in design and in other areas, is often given little attention by historians, collectors, curators and the public. Museums have a special responsibility in this context, as do the media and universities, as they co-create trends and ideas about what is relevant and can influence icon status and personal success. The theme of the presence of designers in the collection seeks to raise awareness of the work of designers and give them an equally strong voice in public discourse. Within this topic, individual design personalities and design teams, studies and partnerships will be examined.

The June main theme documents the ongoing social changes and shows a new perspective on the Vitra Design Museum’s collection. Individual exhibitions will bring to light new additions, treasures from the archive and other treasures from the collection. The objects in the master plan draw attention to the icons of the collection, such as the unique Mesa table by Zaha Hadid or the chair made of steel tubes by the Finnish designer Maija-Liisa Komulainen, which changed the flow of design history. International guest curators, including Khushnu Hoof, will exhibit their favorite objects along with works by young designers – Lisa Ertel or Anne-Sophie Oberkrome. From September 2021, further work by designers will be included in the permanent collection of Vitra Schaudepot.

The main theme at Vitra Schaudepot is a prelude to a long-term and in-depth reassessment of the role of women in design by the Vitra Design Museum. The next phase of the project includes mainly the exhibition Here we are! Women in Design from 1900 to the Present (September 25, 2021 – March 6, 2022), which will begin in the fall of 2021 in the main building of the Vitra Design Museum. While the year-round main theme at Vitra Schaudepot uses the museum’s collection as a starting point, the exhibition at Vitra Design Museum expands the scope to include other areas of design and a wider social context from the early 20th century.
