Experts argued for a long time about whether the author of the work owned by a private Swiss collector is really a well-known French Impressionist or another artist, The Guardian wrote.

The black-haired woman with a slight smile and body turned to the right in the disputed painting is strikingly similar to the woman depicted in Renoir’s work. This oil on canvas was recently valued at £100,000 to £150,000 by Sotheby’s. The algorithm of the Swiss company Art Recognition was based on 206 reproductions of Renoir’s paintings to learn to recognize the painter’s style.

According to experts, it is characterized by jerky brush strokes and striking combinations of contrasting colors. Algorithm also had available smaller cuts from Renoir’s works and paintings by other artists who worked in a similar style and at the same time as the famous Impressionist.

Based on this input, the artificial intelligence determined that the probability that the painting is a work of Renoir is 80.58 percent. Determining the uncertainty surrounding some works of art and expressing it numerically is important, according to Art Recognition CEO Carina Popoviciova.

“Art owners often hear from connoisseurs that it is their ‘gut’ or intuition that tells them whether a painting is genuine or not, which can be frustrating. He really appreciates us for being more precise,” said Popoviciová.
