The first free debt counseling centers have opened in Slovakia. After a year of pilot operation in Bratislava and Prešov, the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Family (MoLSAEO) of the Slovak Republic also opened counseling centers in Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín, Banská Bystrica, Poprad and Lučenec.

Free advice

The operation of free debt counseling is largely funded by the European Union. EUR 15 million is earmarked for their operation this year and next.

“This project has been in preparation for a year and we want to keep it for a long time. A total of 46 counseling centers will be set up in Slovakia, which will provide free counseling to 11,000 families by the end of next year. If a client from a region where the counseling center does not yet exist also needs counseling, he or she can contact them via the social network where there is a website. A lawyer, economist, psychologist and administrative worker will be available at each center. According to the minister, they can cover a whole range of problems that debtors may face.

“Last year, we pilot-tested the operation of counseling centers in Bratislava and Prešov, and based on the acquired knowledge, we optimized help for people who got into debt problems. It’s a kind of enforcement prevention, because our goal is to avoid as many people as possible. “ explained Krajniak.

Ask for help

According to him, the pilot operations of the first two advisory councils have already shown that most people who got into trouble due to high debts can be helped, often by simple tasks. As he reminded, within the project, they have consultatively signed cooperation agreements not only with state institutions, but also with the Slovak Chamber of Executors, collection companies and other institutions, with which they can subsequently cooperate in resolving difficult life situations of debtors.

“They themselves cannot find a way out, but our trained quality debt advisers will be able to find solutions to improve their situation. Because in most cases it is possible. Just take the first step, overcome shyness and ask for help. Every citizen of the Slovak Republic will receive it free of charge. We want to help people as much as possible to get out of the vicious circle of debt and stand on their own two feet. “ completed Krajniak.
