Apply for the Young Balkan Designers 2022 competition

The winners of the competition will receive an award in the form of participation in the international talent show “Salone Satellite” at the International Furniture Fair in Milan 2022.

Organization Mixer calls young designers from Serbia and its wider environment, as well as all other creatives up to 35 years of age, to take part in the regional competition Young Balkan Designers 2022.

Design solutions in response to this year’s theme – “Life Hacks” – are accepted until January 20, 2022, and each participant can apply for more projects by filling out new electronic applications.

The call is valid for individuals i teams from the following countries: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and Turkey.

Designer shortcuts to a better everyday life

The competition is looking for ingenious and witty design solutions, projects, objects, concepts, services, contributing scenarios and inventions a healthy and sustainable lifestyle and user well-being, and initiate a conversation about alternative “design shortcuts” (hacks) towards a better quality of everyday life – at home, at school or at work, in public, in our intimate and common spaces, urban and rural areas, in our physical and digital environment.

“We encourage young creators to think beyond the limits of mass, industrial production and pave the way for self-sustaining, simple and affordable personalized solutions that foster inclusion and equity by providing choice and flexibility for different users and inspiring family, team and community members to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, they unite and help each other “, it is stated in the invitation.

Designers can deliver innovative solutions for furniture, lighting, interior elements, everyday objects, urban gardening innovations, didactic toys and tools, accessories, office supplies, school supplies, home accessories, textiles, protective equipment, fashion clothing, innovative and environmentally friendly materials and procedures; urban services, design services; digital solutions to improve everyday life; innovative design and production scenarios they offer economically and socially sustainable solutions to local problems, both in urban and rural areas.

An international jury will evaluate the innovation and applicability of the design solutions submitted to the competition.

As stated in the invitation, the proposed projects should not necessarily have ambition to “leave a mark”, but to try to reduce the carbon footprint, to include reflections on the principles of the circular economy, the application of local skills and resources, and involve local actors in problem solving and production, creating a positive environmental, economic, cultural and social impact.

The international jury that will evaluate the innovation and applicability of design solutions submitted to the competition consists of: Marcus Fairs, founder and editor-in-chief of one of the world’s most relevant design portals Dezeen.com from Great Britain, alumni of the Young Balkan Designers platform, now accomplished young authors: Ana Kraš, a multi-talented artist and designer from Serbia who works and lives in the USA, Vasso Asfi i Loukas Angelou, design tandem StudioLav from Greece, which is successfully building a career in the UK, Jovana Zhang Bogdanovic, co-founder of the award-winning Pinwu design collective in China, which combines traditional crafts with contemporary experimental design, Denis Leo Hegic, designer and curator of the Berlin Informal Art Scene, founder of the creative studio Supermarket Lab and the Unblock Art Fair in Germany, as well as the virtual Museum of Now.

Belgrade premiere in October

The selected winners of the Young Balkan Designers 2022 competition are expected award in the form of participation in the international talent show “Salone Satellite” at the world’s most prominent design event – the International Furniture Fair in Milan 2022, which after two years of delay due to the pandemic held from April 5 to 10, 2022.

After the world premiere, the awarded works will be presented to domestic and regional audiences in Belgrade at the beginning of October 2022, at the Mixer Festival, one of the most important regional festivals of creativity and social innovation.
