With iOS 14.5, the Safe Browsing service, provided by Google, which Apple uses to warn its users when they arrive on a potentially malicious web page, will be hosted directly on the Cupertino company’s servers. Apple took this decision in order to limit the amount of personal data of its users that Google has access to.
On iOS, as on iPadOS, Safari, Apple’s web browser, has an “Alert if fraudulent website” function. When this feature is enabled, Safari automatically displays an alert to the user when they browse a page identified as malicious.
To provide this service, Apple relies on Google Safe Browsing, a database in which all sites that have been detected by Google as engaging in phishing or other types of scams are listed.
When the user types an address into the browser, Safari queries Google’s database to identify, using a digital fingerprint, if the page is identified as malicious. If this system does not allow Google to know the exact URL that the user is trying to open, it could give it the opportunity to collect the IP address when Safari queries its server.
But things should change. Starting with iOS 14.5, Apple should forward all Safari requests to Google Safe Browsing through its own servers which will act as a proxy. Safari will therefore send a request to Apple’s servers, which will in turn query Google Safe Browsing, before providing the response received to the browser.
