Smartwatches could potentially be used to identify corona infection. The matter has been investigated by researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital.
According to the study, small changes in a user’s heart rate as measured by an Apple Watch may be a sign of a coronavirus infection. These signs can be observed a week before the person was diagnosed with the infection in a corona test.
“This study highlights the future of digital health. It shows that we can make better use of these technologies to better meet changing health needs, which in turn will hopefully help us improve disease management, ”says Assistant Professor Robert Shepherds says in the bulletin.
“There would be a breakthrough in the management of Covid-19 disease if we could develop a way to detect infected people even before symptoms,” Hirten says.
Participants in the study used Apple Watch and answered questions through the app. Participants reported fever, chills, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and so on, for example. The researchers monitored heart rate variability using clock sensors. These data were used to predict whether the researchers developed coronary symptoms.
The researchers also found that heart rate variability returned to normal one to two weeks after the detection of coronary infection.
This is not the first time that wearable equipment has been used in this way. Last year, Iltalehti told how the Oulu company Oura examines together with a U.S. university, identifying symptoms using the company’s smart ring.
