Apple regains its place as the world’s second largest phone manufacturer

During the year, there has been a fierce battle between the mobile manufacturers Apple and Xiaomi, where the latter was a notch in the first quarter of the year to finally pass and reach second place by several percent to good. This was attributed to significant growth on Xiaomi’s side, combined with increased deliveries to Latin America and Africa, among others.

The victory, on the other hand, looks to be short-lived. The analysis company Canalys is now publishing preliminary results about the phone market and the third quarter, where Apple regains second place. They rather push than sail past, with a margin of a single percentage point. In total, they land at 15 percent, while Xiaomi remains at 14 percent.

According to Canalys, the increase is a result of high demand for the iPhone 13. However, the first place still belongs to Samsung, which holds on to 23 percent of the market shares. Fourth and fifth place goes to Vivo and Oppo, respectively, both of which increase to 10 percent each.

Many channels are nervous heading into important sales holidays, such as Singles’ Day in China, and Black Friday in the west. Channel inventories of smartphones are already running low, and as more customers start to anticipate these sales cycles, the impending wave of demand will be impossible to fulfill. Customers should expect smartphone discounting this year to be less aggressive.

The analysis company also warns of low supply and that manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult to meet demand, especially ahead of periods such as Black Friday. Consumers can thus expect less aggressive pricing than in the corresponding period last year.
