Apple introduces iOS 17, more private and intuitive

Apple has announced iOS 17, introducing important updates to the communication experience in the Phone app, FaceTime and Messages, easier sharing with AirDrop, smarter text input and new experiences with Journal and StandBy. The goal is to make the iPhone experience more personal and intuitive.

Phone app improvements

The Phone app now has custom contact banners that allow users to express themselves by customizing their appearance during incoming calls. The Live Voicemail feature provides real-time transcriptions of voice messages while they are being recorded, giving users the opportunity to respond while the caller is leaving their message.

FaceTime Updates

FaceTime now supports audio and video messages. The calls have become more expressive with reactions like hearts, balloons and fireworks. Additionally, FaceTime is now extended to Apple TV 4K, allowing users to start a video call directly from Apple TV or start the call on iPhone and then move it to Apple TV.

Messaging improvements

Messages has significant updates, including a completely new sticker experience that includes new emoji stickers and the ability to create Live Stickers from photos. Other new features include an expandable menu for iMessage apps, more powerful search with search filters, a new refresh arrow, inline replies, real-time location updates, and automatic transcription of audio messages. Messaging also introduces the Check In feature, which allows users to notify contacts when they have safely arrived at their destination.

AirDrop y NameDrop

In iOS 17, Apple enhances AirDrop capabilities with new features. NameDrop, one of these features, allows users to effortlessly share contact information by touching their iPhones or an iPhone and an Apple Watch together. This gesture can also initiate content sharing or SharePlay, allowing users to enjoy music, movies or games together in close proximity. These updates promise to make sharing on iOS devices even more intuitive and engaging.

Smarter text input

l EAutocorrect has been comprehensively updated with a transformative language model to improve word prediction. You can now correct more types of grammatical errors and provide predictive text recommendations inline as users type.

StandBy

This feature offers users a full screen experience with visibly pleasing information designed to be viewed from a distance when iPhone is placed on its side and charging. StandBy is perfect for a nightstand, kitchen counter or desk and can be customized to display a range of clock styles, favorite photos or widgets, including Smart Stacks, which display the right widgets at the right time. With support for Live Activities, Siri, incoming calls, and larger notifications, StandBy makes iPhone even more useful when viewing from a distance. When charging with MagSafe, StandBy remembers the user’s preferred view. Activating StandBy is very easy and can be done at any time by touching the screen. Also, on iPhone 14 Pro with always-on display, it’s always available.

Journal

new app that helps iPhone users reflect on and practice gratitude through journaling, which has been shown to improve well-being. Using on-device machine learning, personalized suggestions can be provided to inspire a user’s journal entry. Suggestions are intelligently curated from recent activity, including photos, people, places, workouts and more, making it easy to start a journal entry, and scheduled notifications can help establish a journal writing habit. With the ability to lock down the app, the use of on-device processing, and end-to-end encryption, Journal is designed to protect user privacy and ensure that no one, including Apple, can access user input. With the new Journaling Suggestions API, developers will be able to add journaling suggestions to their apps
