Apple employees are returning to offices this week

In connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple introduced a remote work system in 2020. Last summer, Tim Cook announced a plan to organize the return of employees to the offices, but the pandemic situation in the US forced the company to postpone it several times. This week, however, its implementation began.

Tim Cook’s original plan was for Apple employees to return to their offices to work stationary three to five days a week. Ultimately, however, a slightly different formula was chosen. From April 11, Apple office workers must work stationary at least one day a week, from May 2 two days a week, and from May 23 three days a week. This hybrid system of work is known as a “pilot scheme” which most likely means that Tim Cook will want to return to his pre-pandemic mode in the future.

The forced return to the offices from the very beginning caused a lot of discontent among Apple employees, who had already written two open letters on the matter to Tim Cook and Deidre O’Brien. An internal survey conducted by them showed that almost 90% of them would prefer to be able to continue working remotely, 58.5% are afraid that the forced return to the office will induce their colleagues to leave, and 36.7% consider leaving if they cannot still work from home. They also point out to Apple that it promotes remote work in advertising using its products, while forbidding it from its own employees.
