APCC asks for more support and argues that the sector “cannot continue to be discriminated against” – Meios & Publicidade

“This is the only [sector] which has borne the costs of the pandemic, financially supporting tenants, mainly through rent, without any support from the State, contrary to what happens with street commerce ”, defends António Sampaio de Mattos, president of the Portuguese Association of Shopping Centers ( APCC). Arguing that Portuguese shopping centers were the ones that most supported storeowners across Europe, ensuring that support unilaterally and without State aid, the association asks the executive for more support, in line with those that are practiced in other European countries, and the end of a treatment that considers discriminatory between the spaces of this nature and street commerce.

“The shopping center sector cannot continue to be discriminated against in relation to other economic sectors”, points out the president of the association, who addressed to the Government, through the Ministry of Economy, a request to adopt “measures identical to those announced in France and in several other European countries, where the State assumes part or all of the support granted to tenants through the direct payment of part of the rent, or through the attribution to the stores of the commercial centers of compensation for the payment of fixed costs, namely the income and other current expenses ”.

The association also argues that “restaurants in shopping centers, which are very affected by the measures imposed, should be allowed to carry out take-away services, as is the case with street restaurants”. “We do not understand how it is that in spaces with security recognized by various institutions, restaurants are not allowed to do take-away services, unlike street restaurants. This discrimination is not understood ”, reinforces António Sampaio de Mattos.
