Android 14 will connect to the satellites

Android 14 will be able to connect to satellites – according to one of the Twitter entries posted by Hiroshi Lockheimer from Google. In practice, it is a response to the recently announced satellite communication, which will be possible thanks to the cooperation between SpaceX and T-Mobile.

SpaceX and T-Mobile recently agreed to jointly create the infrastructure necessary to support “satellite telephony for everyone.” In practice, it is about solving the problem of areas with no cellular coverage on Earth, which cannot (or is not profitable) solved with standard methods, i.e. simply by placing another BTS.

However, to support the planned satellite telephony of SpaceX and T-Mobile, software compatibility will also be necessary and, according to the latest information, which was pointed out by GSM ArenaAndroid 14 will be ready for it. Such confirmation is nice, but at the same time it is not a special surprise, especially in the light of the guesses that the iPhone 14 will do exactly the same, and its premiere is already under the belt.

At the moment, it is not known whether an additional update to earlier versions of Android would not be enough to support satellite telephony implemented in this way. GSM Arena reports that the already installed antennas in smartphones would be capable of supporting appropriate communication, but it is obvious that the preparation of software that will enable this in practice is already the responsibility of Google.

The first tests of connectivity proposed by SpaceX and T-Mobile are to start at the end of 2023, which will coincide with the time of release on the Android 14 market. At first, connectivity is to be available in the United States, but over time it will be expanded to the whole world.
