Android 12 introduces a new hibernation mode for unused applications

January 12, 2021

Discovered in the Android 12 code uploaded on the Open Source Project platform, the new application hibernation service could help better manage storage space.

right description provided even by Google, the new Android 12 feature ensures that applications that are not actively used are switched to a so-called hibernation mode, which optimizes storage usage. Although the compromise made is not mentioned, we can assume that removing applications from hibernation mode means a longer wait time for the next boot.

At this time, Google does not provide specific details such as the criteria for enabling application hibernation, or how this system works.

One option would be for Android to automatically “hibernate” applications that remain unused for a longer period of time, or to propose this service as a measure to optimize storage space on devices with limited internal memory reserves. Users will probably be able to prevent hibernation from switching to certain applications where they may want to receive notifications, such as messaging.

Since the changes have so far only appeared on the Android Open Source Project, a platform where developers can send features and code to improve Android, it remains to be seen whether the new feature will be taken over in the official version of Android 12. Developer Preview may be available for testing as early as next month, and what’s new in Android 12 will be available soon.
