Andalusia denies Simón and announces that 70% of infections are already from the new British strain

January 13, 2021

The vice president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Marín, has considered “reasonable” that after the meeting next Friday of the committee of experts that advises the Andalusian Government on the coronavirus pandemic, mobility in the community should be reduced taking into account the increase “very important” of infections in the last eight days, 70 percent of these of the new British strain.

Asked by journalists, Marín has shown his concern about the health situation caused by the covid, and, although he has stated that “there is an important margin” in terms of hospital pressure, “the concern is extreme” and he does not rule out that “in the next few days we will not have a significant rebound and we will have hospital needs”.

“The availability of hospital and ICU beds is important. The occupancy of the ICUs is nine percent and the hospital is 13 percent, “said the Minister of Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration of the Andalusian Government, who, however, has warned that the spread of the virus with the new strain it is “faster”.

He has also pointed out that the interventions and works carried out by the Junta de Andalucía “quickly and efficiently” during the last semester of last year have now made it possible to have 800 more beds in public hospitals, as well as 230 more beds in ICU.

In this situation, the vice president has indicated that mobility will be reduced “significantly” in Andalusia, but it has not gone into more details until it knows the proposal of the committee of experts. “The reasonable thing is that mobility is reduced and that, in the end, it translates into a relief in health pressure,” he stressed.

Finally, asked about the request in Campo de Gibraltar to suspend classes until the situation generated by the new British strain of coronavirus, Marín has insisted that it is the health authority that assesses the situation.

“This Friday will be valued and there will be a response from the experts”, since he recalled that 99.2 percent of the educational centers in the Andalusian community are free of Covid and only 0.4 percent of the teachers have tested positive in the last tests carried out before their incorporation after the Christmas holidays.
