EHPAD – An Ehpad in Deux-Sèvres, which has 83 residents positive for the coronavirus out of 86 (96%), launched this Thursday, January 14, an urgent appeal to receive reinforcements “carers and non-carers”, we learned at the town hall.

From no case of Covid-19 three weeks ago, the Secondigny nursing home in Deux-Sèvres went to “a few cases” a fortnight ago, then to 83 cases among residents, to which are added several case among the staff of 70 people, told AFP the mayor of Secondigny, Jany Péronnet, also president of this communal Ehpad.

Three deaths were recorded in three days, those of people weakened by other pathologies.

All precautions were taken from the increase in cases, residents confined to rooms, affected staff staying at home, or provided with gloves and gowns for those who remained at the nursing home.

But Jany Péronnet fears “a very complicated situation” if the virus affects “more nursing staff, who already work 12-hour days and can no longer keep up”.

On its website, the Secondigny nursing home writes that it “held out for 10 months without the slightest case of Covid-19. To date, we are in turn affected by this pandemic. We call on all available people, caregivers and non-carers, to come as reinforcements on the nursing home ”.

238.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the department

According to the town hall, “around twenty, probably more” reinforcements will be necessary to ensure the functioning of the nursing home, care tasks or not.

The town hall relayed this call, and approached temporary workers, and received an offer from the SDIS (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service) to “support”.

The mayor said he could not explain the acceleration “at an appalling speed” of contamination in the establishment. He sees a probable “accumulation of things”, including staff movements during the end of year celebrations, and residents’ hospital returns.

Deux-Sèvres, according to the latest weekly report from the Regional Health Agency (ARS), is by far the leading department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine in terms of viral circulation. The incidence rate is 238.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but 326 for those over 65. It has 22 nursing homes affected by the epidemic.
