A YouTuber who deliberately shot down a plane to get more views on the Internet will plead guilty to obstructing a federal investigation by cleaning up the crash site, US prosecutors say.
Trevor Jacob (29) posted a video of the plane crash on YouTube in December 2021, hinting that it was an accident.
That video has so far been viewed by 2.9 million people.
In the plea agreement, Jacob stated that the filming was part of a product sponsorship deal.
He could face up to 20 years in prison.
The US Department of Justice announced on Thursday, May 11 that the 29-year-old pilot and paratrooper will plead guilty to obstructing a federal investigation.
In November 2021, Jacob left an airport in Santa Barbara, California on a solo flight with cameras mounted on his plane.
In addition to the cameras, he also brought a parachute and a stick for painting.
He “didn’t intend to reach his destination, his plan was to eject from the aircraft mid-flight and film himself parachuting to the ground and the aircraft descending and collapsing,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said.
The plane crashed in the Los Padres National Forest 35 minutes after takeoff.
He went to the place and found the recording.
Some YouTube viewers doubted that there was an accident at all, noting that Jacob was already wearing a parachute and didn’t even try to land safely.
The YouTuber reported the accident to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible for preserving the wreckage.
According to the plea agreement, he later claimed he did not know the location of the accident.
The announcement states that he returned by helicopter, safely removed the wreckage, which he later destroyed.
Jacob is scheduled to appear in court in the coming weeks.
His pilot’s license was revoked last year.
Jacob’s lawyer did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment.
