After the great success of the Ryzen 5000 desktop processors with Zen 3 architecture, AMD brings an alternative for laptops as well.
It’s been a year and a few days since AMD introduced the last generation of mobile chips with ZEN 2 architecture at last year’s CES exhibition. Today it is again at CES, although this time it is virtual and AMD brings the latest generation Ryzen 5000 Mobile. Based on a newer generation of architecture Zen 3, even better and more powerful. If Intel is already able to roll in the desktop segment, why not move it further into laptops. 13 new processors were introduced to choose from.
Against the previous generation of mobile Ryzen 4000 is in a nutshell changed only the cores from Zen 2 to Zen 3 and doubled the L3 cache. Done. Finally, it is one complete chip with eight Zen 3 cores and not a conglomerate of two chips of four. Osm cores share 16 MB of non-inclusive L3 cache. Everything has been simplified as with the 5000 desktop series.
Unfortunately, if you were expecting an upgrade and graphics, then this time it doesn’t look anything. There are still eight Vega computing units left. There will be no transition to RDNA2 yet, which seems to be expected next year. Another thing we still have to regret in notebooks is the newer PCIe 4.0 standard. We therefore remain with the support of eight PCIe 3.0 lines, then NVMe and SATA, from the memories DDR4-3200 and LPDDR4X-4266.
Ryzen 5000 Mobile – powerful H series
Where you need performance with your notebook, look for H-series chips. The most powerful ones with overclocking support are referred to by AMD as HX and have a TDP set to 45+ Watts. Standard high-performance models refer to AMD as H and have a TDB fixed at 45 W. More economical, but still powerful processors are then HS and have a TDP of 35 W.

Ryzen 5000 Mobile – energy saving series U
A little simpler marking is for economical models, where everything is uniformly marked with the letter U and TDP is set to 15 W. However, it is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. Unfortunately, AMD sells a mix of new and old architecture here under the new series. Some models are already with the Zen 3 generation, but others still have Zen 2 cores. It is not possible to distinguish it from the designation, you must remember that only the Ryzen 7 5800U and Ryzen 5 5600U are interesting.

AMD presented endurance test results on the Ryzen 7 5800U and reports up to 21.4 hours of 1080p video playback on a machine with a 53 Wh battery. With WiFi turned on. And also 17.5 hours in MobileMark 2018. No further details, but even if it was with minimal screen brightness, it’s still a great result.
