The analytical company Mercury Research has prepared another market survey with x86 processors and compared the results of Intel and AMD. In most of the studied categories, the growth of the company AMD was successful, which is cutting Intel’s share. However, it must be said that Intel’s market shares are still significantly higher than AMD’s, which in most markets is somewhere around a sixth to a seventh.

But before we get to the percentages, let’s first look at the general market situation. We are well aware that most hardware manufacturers have recently experienced significant sales declines as the market became saturated during the coronavirus pandemic and now the poor macro-economic situation has been added to this. Still, according to Mercury Research, signs are starting to emerge that the worst is over and there are signs of an incipient market recovery.

In the tables, you can see the number from the previous year for the same period (Q1/2022) and the number from the previous quarter (Q4/2022) for comparison. In the case of desktops, AMD is approaching the 20% mark, which it briefly reached last year, but is still below it for the period under study. The fact is that AMD has had similar numbers since 2019.

AMD |

Intel |

Unfortunately, AMD is not doing very well in the mobile sphere. Between 2021 and 2022, it was even above the 20% mark there (perhaps a year ago it was 22.5%), but in the last quarter they are more like somewhere around 16%. It fell by 6.3 percentage points from last year, which is a big drop. So we’ll see if the new Dragon Range and Phoenix processors will help him.

On the contrary, AMD is doing very well in the server area. The year 2018 started somewhere around 1.5%, gradually the share grew and at the turn of 2021 and 2022 it was only somewhere between 10-12%. It has risen by more than 6 percentage points over the past year and already has an 18% share of the x86 server market.

Intel |

In the total sum of all x86 processors, however, AMD has a much larger share. There it amounts to 34.6% and is an increase of almost 7 percentage points year-on-year. You are probably asking how this is possible, when in the previous categories it had only about 16-19%. The x86 architecture can also be found in IoT devices and especially in game consoles, and here AMD has a significant lead over Intel. AMD processors power the latest Xboxes and PlayStation 5.
