Alphabet stops with the Loon internet project

The parent company of Google Alphabet is discontinuing the Loon internet project, in which balloons bring broadband internet to remote parts of the world.

The project is already nine years old proved unprofitable, although it has proved useful after a hurricane hit Puerto Rico and there were temporarily no internet connections.

Alphabet already had permission from Kenya to start its first commercial services.

What may also play a role is that in time internet satellites such as those of Elton Musk can provide such connections. Some of the technology lives on in other broadband projects such as Taara.
