New York. With a final victory in the US Open over Norwegian Casper Ruud, Spanish Carlos Alcaraz has secured the first grand slam title of his career and a position as number one in the world rankings.

– This is something I have dreamed of since I was a child – to be number one in the world and to win a grand slam, says the 19-year-old Spaniard in an interview on the field after the match, according to the AFP news agency.

– This is something I have worked really, really hard for. It is difficult to talk right now, there are many emotions, he adds.

The 19-year-old Spaniard beat Casper Ruud in the final in four sets with the numbers 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Alcaraz is also the youngest winner of the men’s US Open since Pete Sampras won the trophy in New York City in 1990.

– This is something that I have tried to achieve. I put a lot of hard work into it with my team and my family. I am only 19 years old and all the most important decisions have been made by my parents and my team. This is a special moment for me, he says according to AFP.

Both Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud were chasing their first grand slam title at the US Open.

After the defeat, the 23-year-old Norwegian says that the hunt continues.

– It was a special evening for both of us. We knew what was at stake. I am of course disappointed, but I want to continue the hunt for a grand slam title and first place in the ATP world rankings, says Casper Ruud, according to the NTB news agency.

With the final victory, Carlos Alcaraz takes over first place in the world rankings after Russian Daniil Medvedev when the list is updated later on Monday.

Casper Ruud has to settle for second place on the list.
