Agriculture is Assessed as a Sector Vulnerable to Pest Attacks, Ministry of Agriculture urges farmers to have insurance – Agriculture is a sector that is vulnerable to OTP (Plant Destruction Organisms) attacks and climate change. For this reason, the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) urges farmers to protect themselves with Rice Farming Business Insurance (AUTP) or agricultural insurance.

“There must be a protection program for farmers. This AUTP was launched in the framework of protecting farmers from experiencing losses due to crop failure due to pest attacks and climate change,” said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL).

AUTP is intended so that farmers have protection to anticipate climate change that has begun to hit a number of regions in Indonesia.

Director General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities (PSP) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ali Jamil added, by participating in the program which is also called agricultural insurance, farmers will get coverage every time they experience crop failure.

“Of course there are several requirements for crop failure that are covered by insurance. Every time they experience crop failure, there are several problems required by insurance,” said Ali.

According to Ali, the coverage provided by agricultural insurance is IDR 6 million per hectare per season. With the agricultural insurance program, farmers can still try to return to their agricultural cultivation when they experience crop failure.

“With this program, we want food security and agricultural productivity to be undisturbed. With agricultural insurance, farmers can have their capital back to redevelop their agriculture,” said Ali.

The Director of Financing of the Directorate General of PSP of the Ministry of Agriculture, Indah Megahwati, said that there were several requirements for farmers who wanted to join the AUTP program. First, farmers must be members of farmer groups.

“Farmers then pay a premium of IDR 36 thousand per season per hectare, out of a total premium of IDR 180 thousand per season per hectare. The remaining IDR 144 thousand per season per hectare is subsidized by the government through the state budget,” he said.
