Viber, one of the leading global applications for free and easy communication, has expressed outrage over the recently updated privacy terms of WhatsApp users. Although until now the users of this application had the choice not to share their mobile phone number with Facebook, from now on it will be mandatory – and in connection with which they will have to give their consent in the next 30 days in order to continue using their accounts on that platform.
Brian Acton, co-founder of the Whatsapp user, also commented on the deteriorating attitude towards privacy in an interview with Forbes magazine in 2018, referring – among other things – to the reasons that led him to tweet the recommendation to users to delete Facebook from their devices. “I sold the privacy of my users to Facebook for my own higher interest, thus making a compromise that has haunted me every day since,” he said on the occasion.
This gesture completes the full integration of Whatsapp into Facebook, and the user data of this messaging app will be used to monetize more than ever before – which will surely worry users who want their mutual correspondence to remain private. Until January 4, Whatsapp claimed that user privacy was part of the application’s “DNA” and that the concept of services available on it was based on the principle of privacy. According to these allegations, messages from Whatsapp will not be visible on Facebook, and the only purpose of integrating these two platforms in that sense is to improve the services of Whatsapp users. These allegations have since been deleted from the application’s usage policy.
In contrast to these “sliding” privacy settings of Whatsapp users, Viber’s basic principle was and remains to preserve the privacy and security of user data, through the following options:
- Standard end-to-end encryption personal messages and user calls without special settings
- Absence of storing delivered messages on servers – with the option of saving to the cloud only after activation by the user
- Privacy of the screen content with correspondence – reinforced by self-destructive messages and coded hidden correspondence
- The principle of sharing the data of its users with Facebook – all business relations with this company have been terminated. None of your data is shared, nor will it be shared with Facebook.
“User privacy has been literally trampled through through a recent update to the Whatsapp app. In this way, one of the most important rights of users is completely marginalized, and I am afraid that this infamous record in disrespecting privacy will soon be surpassed by the same actors. “This makes us even more proud of Viber’s principled attitude towards maintaining the privacy of data and communication of its users, and I use this opportunity to invite all people who do not see themselves as a source of data for sale on the open market to make their correspondence and calls via Viber,” he said. Jamel Agaua, General Manager of the Rakuten Viber application.
