after Express Delivery, this dystopian South Korean series is a hit on the platform

Netflix has been relying heavily on South Korean series since the success of Squid Game. The platform has also decided in 2021 toinvest $500 million in the production of original content made in Seoul and add an additional $2.3 billion for 34 programs planned for the year 2023. Among them, Black Knight, a dystopian series which is currently a hit on Netflix by placing itself in the top three of the TOP 10 most-watched series.

A dystopian South Korean series to discover for all fans

In this dystopian series, we find on screen Kim Woo-bin (Master), Ace which we have already seen in Taxi Driver and soon in Kill Bok-Soon as well as Kang Yoo-seok.

Released on May 12, the series is a hit on Netflix. Adapted from a Toomics webtoon by Lee Yook-gyung, it is signed Cho Ui-seok to whom we owe Cold Eyes or Master.

Black Knight shows us a world in which the air is unbreathable due to climate change and pollution. On y suit an oxygen delivery man who must ensure his deliveries in a totally deserted country where dangers and social inequalities reign. The main character is therefore responsible for delivering the means to survive to the population abandoned to their fate in 2071.

Impossible to go outside without protection. Only 1% of the population survived and a strict social hierarchy was established in the abandoned and deserted territories of Korea. The program was filmed partly in Mongolia and in the Gobi Desert for a budget of nearly $19 million. Composed of six episodes, this represents a budget of 3.1 million dollars per episode (compared to 2.3 for Squid Game to compare). Some may find inspiration from Parasite, Snowpiercer or even of The Serving. Behind the special effects, we find VFX Studio Westworld, one of the most successful companies in South Korea.

A few black points to highlight

Unfortunately, even though the show ranks second in the TOP 10 most watched series on Netflix right now, Black Knight sometimes helps us special effects that leave something to be desired as well as a somewhat hazardous editing. Some critics lament that the series conveys clichés through the characters as well as the lack of emotion over the episodes which does not allow the viewer to become attached to them despite the performance of the actors.

There is always that the action scenes are worth diving into all 6 episodes of Black Knight. Despite some dark spots, lovers of dystopia and fans of South Korean productions will immerse themselves in this series which is available in full on Netflix.
