Affordable smartphones are improving faster than flagships. They are similarly chasing trends, moving en masse from IPS screens to AMOLED or increasing the usable area on the front panel. But at the same time, devices cheaper than 45 thousand rubles are adopting more and more flagship parameters. For example, 350 thousand points in Antutu and performance without restrictions for the price level of 25-35 thousand rubles is already a given, not a rarity. This also applies to other characteristics.
Vivo V23e came to our review. This is a middle-class smartphone – a segment where you don’t expect unique features and capabilities from a smartphone, but at the same time it should look decent in all respects (screen, camera, performance, autonomy). Let’s see what he can do.
From the point of view of ergonomics, vivo decided not to be original, the smartphone is made in the classic style for 2022 – a teardrop-shaped cutout for the front camera, the rear camera on a rectangular platform.
Separately, I note the sharp side edges – this is the trend of 2021 and 2022, previously Android smartphone brands ignored this exterior element and added beveled or rounded ends. I like this solution – the smartphone is somehow more convenient to hold in your hand, there is no feeling that it is about to slip out of your hand.
Otherwise, the smartphone does not stand out tactile. If I were asked to describe it in one word, I would call it “normal”. This is not a fault or a compliment. The device does not surprise externally, but it combines all the features that will allow it to please the majority.
The weight of the device is 172 grams. It feels light in the hand, does not weigh down clothes when carried in a pocket. Thickness – 7.41 mm, the usual value. The camera bulges a lot, however, it takes some getting used to, as this is an engineering overhead necessary to equip the device with high-quality optics.
In terms of design, the smartphone already stands out. Glare strips diverge along the back panel, changing color depending on the angle of incidence of light. The back panel itself is painted in three different colors – blue, lilac and pink. Moreover, the transition is sharp, the same stripes separate them. Color, frankly, an amateur.
Summing up, we can say that visually the smartphone turned out to be successful. Trendy and familiar solutions from the point of view of the exterior are combined with the original colors. This means that it is easy to get used to the device, and visually it will bring positive emotions to both you and those around you.
The set of parameters is optimal for 2022. The matrix type is AMOLED, the diagonal is 6.44 inches, the resolution is Full HD+, the aspect ratio is 19.5:9.
Separately, I note the brightness of 720 cd / m2. This value is higher than the market average for such a price. With such a screen, it is comfortable to use a smartphone on a bright day – the display does not glare, the color reproduction is not distorted, you do not have to cover it with your hand to clearly see the content.
In the Antutu test, the device scores 355,000 points. POCO M4 Pro is sold for the same price, it gives out the same amount. Among direct competitors, only realme GT Master Edition is higher (541,610 points), which means that the smartphone can be called one of the most powerful for its price.
I have run three demanding games on it – PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile and Fortnite. All of them turned on automatically at high graphics settings, in each case, after an hour of continuous gaming, the case did not overheat, no throttling was observed.
Memory is definitely a plus. The amount of RAM is 8 GB. This option allows you to run and keep two applications open at the same time. For me it was PUBG and Telegram, for an hour of active use, none of them rebooted.
128 GB is enough to store application data, as well as photos and videos for a year and a half without restrictions. From personal experience, with active downloading of games and applications, as well as saving photos and videos, about a third of the drive will be filled in six months.
The disadvantages of the device include autonomy. The battery capacity is 4000 mAh, with a moderate load (messengers, social networks, browser, music), the device works throughout the day. This is not bad, only in 2022 the norm is one and a half to two days. Tolerable, but could be done better.
Let’s start with the front camera, there is something to talk about. Its resolution is 50 MP. I am not a supporter of the fact that resolution is the main parameter for the camera, but here is an exception. Selfies are where we pay special attention to detail, white balance and color reproduction. 50 MP solves the first problem.
The resulting selfies can be cropped and enlarged, while the quality will not decrease. I was impressed with how the camera conveys the smallest details, such as eyelashes or eyebrow textures. When enlarged, they are not oiled, and the picture remains high-quality.
The maximum video shooting capabilities are 1080p 30 FPS. A number of journalists criticized the smartphone for such low parameters, I will refrain – in social networks, stories and video broadcasts are limited to 720p 30 FPS, so the smartphone fits into these standards. If you make vlogs on YouTube, then the entire technical potential of the camera will already be required there – 1080p 30 FPS. Why journalists demand 4K 60 FPS, I don’t understand, so I think the front camera is excellent.
The portrait mode is implemented at the proper level – the object in the foreground is qualitatively cut off from the background. Overall, I consider vivo to be the best brand in terms of bokeh quality.
The main camera is triple – 64 + 8 + 2 MP. This is the main camera, ultra wide-angle and macro module. Standard set for 2022. The last module was added frankly for beauty – there is no autofocus, the detail is terrible. It is added for the sake of quantity, yet three or four cameras are the rule of good form for smartphones of the last two or three years. If in flagships all three are functional (main, ultra-wide-angle, telephoto), then in more affordable models you have to take them out using a macro module or a depth of field sensor.
The main camera shoots great. I was especially pleased with the dynamic range – the pictures are voluminous, the color palette is rich, and the detail is preserved even in the dark areas of the photo on a clear day.
At night, the pictures are also of high quality. I like the vivo algorithms and the emphasis on color reproduction – the pictures are juicy and saturated. In almost all reviews, I say that I like naturalness in night shots, this model, like other devices of the brand, adds variety and pleasantly surprises.
Night mode is supported by the main module and ultra-wide angle. And he is not so happy anymore – the dynamic range and detail are falling, which is inevitable according to the laws of physics, but they do it unusually strong, the pictures are unnatural.
During the day, the ultra-wide is also not happy – the colors are too dull, there are noises even in ideal lighting conditions. This is a typical situation for a smartphone at this price, and yet, it is worth pointing out a common problem – in price ranges below the flagship (from 65 thousand rubles), brands tend to keep the number of modules without thinking about their quality. Unlike the macro and depth sensor, the ultra-wide is usable, but only in ideal lighting. At the same time, it is equipped with trendy features, such as night mode, but for show. And I would like to see the desire to improve the quality of images.
In general, the camera is not without flaws, but interesting. The balance of pluses and minuses for vivo does not change from year to year – I really like portrait photos, but the desire to get into trends by adding “garbage” modules, frankly, enrages.

To attract attention to a B-brand (outside the top 5 most popular in Russia), it is necessary to offer a unique user experience. Vivo V23e has a balance of characteristics combined with a comfortable body and original colors.
The smartphone does not have unique parameters, while there is no alternative on the market with such a powerful processor, as well as 8 GB of RAM and a screen with a brightness of 720 cd / m2 for 29,990 rubles.
The disadvantages include autonomy and the screen in all other parameters except brightness. Their performance is not bad, but they are inferior to competitors, and the elimination of these shortcomings could make the vivo V23e almost the best mobile device in its price category. In the meantime, this is just a very high-quality model.
