Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko accused Poland on Monday of wishing a conflict over migrants on its border with Belarus due to its internal problems and problems with the European Union. At the same time, according to the BelTA agency, he claimed that he would send the migrants home, but they do not want it, however, according to him, Belarusian planes could transport them to Munich, whose town hall is said to be willing to accept them.
Belarus does not want any conflict on the border with Poland, on the contrary, Poland needs such a conflict today, said Lukashenko, according to the state agency BelTA. “He has more than enough internal problems, problems with the European Union …,” he said. “It’s completely harmful for us,” he added.
“We are ready, as we usually did, to put everyone on the planes, including the (Belarusian airline) Belavie, which will take them back home. But I must say that these people are very stubborn: no one wants to return,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying.
At the same time, the President set aside the question of how migrants got to the Polish border and to Belarus in general in such large numbers. Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, as well as the EU, blame Lukashenko for attracting migrants to his country and then sending them to the EU’s borders, retaliating for the EU’s sanctions on his regime for human rights violations.
The Union is preparing further sanctions for this migration crisis, and Lukashenko has threatened to respond harshly today. “He’s haunted by sanctions. All right, we’ll see. He thinks I’ll keep quiet, that I’m just talking and nothing more. Nothing like that. We’ll defend ourselves. We have nowhere else to back down,” Lukashenko said.
What could be his specific reaction today did not specify. Last week, however, he mentioned the possibility of stopping the transit of gas and other goods through Belarus to Europe.
