About 200 people attended the charity reunion of the Association Against Cancer in Martorell, at the Café d’El Progrés, on Saturday evening. It consisted of a dinner, a raffle of gifts – given by companies, shops and individuals -, speeches and a performance by a DJ. The event raises money to research the disease, stand by the sick and promote health for all. It had not been celebrated for four years due to the pandemic.
In the coming days, the association will make public the collection, which adds up to research and make possible the goal of alleviating the severity of the disease. “In the last 50 years, we have been able to change the profile of cancer a little, which is increasingly curable”, emphasized the managing director of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Martorell Foundation (FHSJDM), Doctor Jordi Trelis.
In fact, in the last two decades, the death rate from malignant tumors has been reduced by 22% and the aim is to reach a 70% survival rate by 2030. Trelis added that timing has a lot to do with this change: ” From now on there will be people who will live with cancer for many years, and who may even die from another disease. And this has been achieved thanks to aid”.

With an experience of more than 30 years at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), Trelis affirmed that “the patients of Martorell are in good hands. In our Hospital, both oncological and hematological cancer are managed by the ICO and you have access to the best treatments available today.”

The mayor of Martorell, Xavier Fonollosa, thanked the work done by the Association Against Cancer in Martorell, which despite not being able to celebrate the dinner in recent years “has not stopped doing things all this time”. In particular, he emphasized the role of president Montserrat Campmany, saying that “it is a matter of pride that in Martorell, where we are so supportive, we have such a powerful association and with a president who is a Favorite Daughter and who has a terrible drive”. He encouraged the board “to keep it up” and assured them of the maximum support.

The entity has been adding cash, in Martorell. One of them is that of Yolanda Cuesta, member of the Provincial Council of the AECC. Cuesta explained that he has been collaborating at the local level “since 2008, when I worked at the Hospital and I met Montse, and she explained to me everything they did. I think that without their help and that of society, everything would be unviable.”
He added that “it is a pride to be part of this project” which adds up efforts to provide “more than 10,000 direct assistance to the sick this year, and make it possible for Catalonia to allocate almost 40 million euros for more than 140 projects research, the great hope”.
