Prague – A young man reported to the police this early evening and confessed to spraying part of Charles Bridge in Prague. He recognized himself in the published footage from the cameras. Police officers also know who the girl who was on record was with him. Both are juveniles, so according to the law, the police cannot provide further information on the case, the Prague police said on the website and twitter.
“In the early evening, a young man came to the local police department, who got to know the footage in the media and confessed to spraying the bridge. We also know the identity of the girl from the published footage who was with him. Since they are both teenagers, the law does not allow further information to be provided, “the police informed.
The court can punish the crime of damaging another’s property by up to three years in prison, juveniles face lower sentences if they are found guilty. The damage that occurred at one of the most famous monuments in the Czech Republic was preliminarily estimated at 100,000 crowns.
Police announced this morning that they wanted to interrogate a man and a woman, who they found on camera recordings, due to the painting of the bridge signs. She didn’t say if she suspected them directly of spraying the bridge. At noon, she published their footage from the cameras and called on citizens to share any information about the young couple on line 158. She did not rule out that they were foreigners, so she also asked the staff of the accommodation facilities for help.
The police have been dealing with the case since Friday, when inscriptions in English spray-painted in non-washable turquoise appeared on a part of Charles Bridge. They are on a part of a stone railing, on the pedestal of the statue of St. Augustine and on lamp stands.
Graffiti from Charles Bridge this afternoon began to remove the restorer called by the Technical Administration of Roads. He estimated that he would finish the job in a matter of days. He had removed vandalisms from sprayers from the oldest bridge in the metropolis several times, but described the case as the most extensive so far. The man told reporters that when removing graffiti, it was important to start as soon as possible.
In recent months, this is not an isolated case, the last damage by the so-called tag is recorded by the Technical Administration of Roads on the stairs at the turn of May and June.
The bridge was sprayed by vandals in the past. Last December, the Prague City Court upheld a one-year suspended sentence against a German tourist, Benjamin Wittig, who, together with his brother Niclas Steiger, spray-painted one of the pillars of Charles Bridge in the summer of 2019. He also left foreigners a hundred thousand fine and deportation for five years.

The restorer Jakub Tlučhoř, who started removing graffiti from Charles Bridge this afternoon, estimated that he would finish the work in a matter of days. He has removed vandalisms from sprayers from the oldest bridge in Prague several times, but he described this case as the most extensive so far. A man called to the site by the Technical Administration of Communications told reporters that it was important to start graffiti as soon as possible.
Tlučhoř is a professional restorer with a license for cultural monuments. In the morning, he took samples on the bridge to test the solubility of the binders contained in the spray used. He then developed a suitable mixture of organic solvents.
“It is a gel that is applied to individual scuffed areas and cyclically blown into the stone surface with pressurized steam to expel pigments from the porous system and prevent any damage to the stone,” said the man who interrupted the holiday abroad due to the current case.
The railing underwent reconstruction some time ago and some of the blocks are new. According to Tlučhor, however, this will not play a role in the method of removing the spray. “The new stone has a similar composition. It is a coarse-grained quartz sandstone with similar porous systems, “he explained.
He will start working on his own, he will probably continue overnight. Should removal be delayed, a support team will be called.
“It’s important to remove graffiti as soon as possible. Time plays a role because of the polymerization of colors – the binders that are on it, “he stressed. According to him, graffiti also attracts other vandals. “If, for example, you have older graffiti on the facade, it attracts another graffiti artist who will sign it. It’s like having a dump – another person throws his mess in there, “he said.
“Charles Bridge is our pride, we must not like this damage,” said the restorer. He told the perpetrator that if he could, he would have graffiti removed at all monuments as punishment. “It simply came to our notice then. There is a lot of work behind it and also the risk of damaging the monument, “he concluded.
While foreign tourists today passed graffiti unnoticed, Czech visitors to the bridge often resented them and called vandals unflattering expressions. They also remembered the punishment of two Germans who spray-painted one of the pillars of the bridge in the summer of 2019. The court imposed a one-year condition, a 100,000 fine and deportation for five years.
