A year of pandemic passed in Panarea, free from contagions. It is the story of Massimo, 66, and Michela, 55, from Turin, who decided to spend the months of Covid in their white house overlooking the sea, in the Sicilian archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. To tell it is the Agi.

“We have lived in freedom since early June – Michela explains to AGI – and we don’t intend to move for now, we don’t like the life we see ‘outside’ even if we want to see our loved ones again and we hope to be able to do so soon. , as soon as things settle down. I was struck by the fact that, before our arrival, so I was told, for some time some inhabitants took an ‘ancient’ attitude, that of defending the island from possible enemies arriving by hydrofoil. Even if one of them went to and from Milazzo he was perceived as a danger and he looked with suspicion at the ‘strangers’ who landed ”. “But then”, he continues, “I don’t know what happened in the minds of those who live here, about 300 people, but it’s like they have forgotten everything and Covid has become a very marginal topic of discussion among them”.

Another twenty people made the same choice as Michela and Massino. “We hang out on a regular basis in a group of six, we have become like family. Our days depend on the weather. Captain of the ‘sudden summers’, of the moments when you can sunbathe on the terrace or on the most sheltered beaches. Now, someone starts taking a bath. Or you go on a hike on the high ground. None of us have heating, we light the fireplaces when it’s cold, ”they say.

And again: “In Panarea the carabinieri are ‘seasonal’, now they are not there and at times I am a bit worried if I think something could happen. A pharmacist comes once a week, we have a general practitioner. The newsagent isn’t there, I get information on the radio ”.

“Once I went shopping in Lipari and I had a crisis due to the distances that seemed difficult to keep. I decided not to go there anymore ”, says Michela.

In recent months – says the AGI – two cases of Covid have been recorded, which involved as many workers, who discovered that they were positive as soon as they landed thanks to a test done previously. They were immediately isolated, “whether Covid is filmed during the summer months is not known”, say the islanders to Agi.
