A unique Slovak application will soon detect serious diseases – Communication – Science and technology

A unique and especially very useful application, which can detect Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease based on a voice recording, is in the final testing phase. Volunteers can speed up its launch.

Slovak experts, who have been developing a mobile application called EWA for the third year, are at the finish line. The application is unique in the world. It works on the basis of artificial intelligence, which can evaluate whether a person suffers from degenerative brain diseases – Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s – based on the spoken word and many of its specifics (articulation, reaction speed, accuracy, volume…).

How is it possible?

Among the first symptoms of these diseases is the limitation of vocabulary and forgetting words. Although both diseases are incurable, early diagnosis is very important. The earlier the disease is detected, the greater the chance of slowing down its progress, which can be achieved with appropriately adjusted medication and therapy.

The programmer and director of the computer company Axon Pro, Alfréd Zimmermann, is behind the application, who teamed up with scientists – experts in neurodegenerative diseases. In cooperation with the Memory Center and the SAS Institute of Informatics, they created a free application that should work simply, but at the same time efficiently.

“A person gradually sees 20 simple pictures of objects and activities. After each picture, he tells his cell phone what he saw in one word. Subsequently, a more complicated picture of the scene will appear to him, where there are more people and activities that are related to each other. He has 90 seconds to describe this picture. The entire statement will be recorded and evaluated,” explained project author Alfréd Zimmermann.

They are looking for volunteers

In order for the results to be truly verified, the app goes through rigorous testing and learning. “Simplified, we can say that we are now teaching artificial intelligence to listen and evaluate individual images with different accents and in different Slovak dialects. So far, we have recordings of more than 1,200 volunteers, of which more than 60% are from the Bratislava area, some from eastern and central Slovakia,” said Zimmerman.

He added that much more is reflected in the voice and speech than we think. For example, the region we come from or the area we live in, but also the education we have achieved and our lifestyle.

“Currently, we still need people over 50 years old from other regions and especially with lower education, so that the application has enough samples and learning material from a really whole spectrum. We anticipate that if we manage to complete all the recordings and learning of the application that we still need, we could launch it into live operation at the end of the summer.”

Life with illness

The fact that early diagnosis is important in the case of these diseases is also confirmed by MUDr. Vladimir Klement.

“Correct and timely treatment can help maintain a higher quality of life for patients for a longer period of time. For example, in the case of Alzheimer’s disease, we know that once the structures in the brain that are important for long-term and short-term memory, thinking and reasoning abilities begin to die, it is an irreversible and incurable process. However, it is possible to slow down and alleviate the symptoms of dementia if it is diagnosed in time,” says an expert from Agapé Senior Park, which also specializes in the care of seniors with neurodegenerative diseases.
