A trick on Romanian Language Day

Romanian Language Day was marked with a message from Klaus Iohannis. I suppose that one of his advisers drew his attention to the fact that the anonymous Day of the Romanian Language is coming up, and it would be good if he also came out with a statement, a press release, a public presence. And, because during the eight years of his mandate, Iohannis did nothing for the Romanian Language, his advisers covered him with a text that was published. I reproduce it out of respect for the language we speak and write.

The Romanian language is the key to our national identity and the home of a rich literature. Throughout the ages, it has defined our culture, inspired and spiritually enriched entire generations.

At the same time, the Romanian language was and continues to be a real social link. She brought us together and kept us together during the most difficult moments in our history. The language we speak connects us to each other and to the place where we were born or have roots – Romania. It is part of our identity, and we have a duty to protect and nurture it.

On this special day, I convey my full appreciation to the teachers of the Romanian Language in the country and abroad, but also to the first mentors of any child – the parents. In the country or in communities outside the borders, they are meant to proudly transmit the treasure of the language to generations of Romanian children everywhere.

In recent years, our country hosts an increasing number of inhabitants whose mother tongue is not Romanian. It is important that everyone has the chance to learn the Romanian language and integrate harmoniously into the Romanian society. Teaching and learning the Romanian language, as a non-native language, must become a permanent offer of our education system.

At the same time, a paradigm shift is necessary when we talk about the educational objectives for learning the Romanian language. Along with encouraging reading, comprehension, argumentation and correct use of language should become priority goals. Just fighting illiteracy functionally, we have the chance to allow as many people as possible to use the Romanian language to take part in the life of the community and to contribute to the development of society.

The Romanian language is the foundation of our identity. We treasure it by using it right, cultivating it, and helping others receive the gift of learning it and enjoying its richness.

Happy birthday to the Romanian language and its speakers!

On the occasion of Romanian Language Day, the Cotroceni Palace will be illuminated in the colors of the national flag, this evening, starting at 8:30 p.m.

Try to remember a modest involvement of President Klaus Iohannis! Maybe he said something about the vulgarity of the language and the words used by politicians or journalists. Maybe he attended a meeting of the Romanian Academy dedicated to our language? Maybe he went to a school to present at least a prize in a Romanian language contest? Maybe he requested a meeting with Romanian language teachers from kindergartens, schools, high schools or from the diaspora. Anything that shows us that he is concerned about the language of the country he lives in and that he praises. I for one don’t know anything. And, I suspect, the presidential message published on Romanian Language Day is just a form of pretending that he is also working. Not that the Romanian-speaking population would say:

– Well, the man doesn’t do anything anymore!
