A third of Brits approve of the vegan diet

More than a third of people in the UK are interested in becoming vegan, according to a new survey indicating that the number of people following a plant-based diet has skyrocketed over the past two years. 36% of British adults believe that following a vegan or plant-based diet is “an admirable thing to do,” found the YouGov survey.

The survey, conducted on behalf of the organization Veganuary, which encourages people to try veganism in January, asked 2,079 adults about their attitude towards giving up animal products.

YouGov found that 8% of respondents said they are already on a plant-based diet. A very high number if we look at the previous estimates: in 2019, the Vegan Society estimated that 600,000 adults, or just over 1% of the population, were vegans.

For the historian, Yuval Noah Harari, the way modern agriculture treats animals is one of the “worst crimes in history”.

Whatever your opinion, as the world’s population is heading towards 10 billion, current trends in meat consumption and production cannot be sustained. The British are beginning to understand.
