On April 19, the Rezekne district of the Latgale regional department of the State Police received a statement from a resident who transferred a large amount of money to a fake seller of building materials – as a result, the man was left without goods and without money.
The victim posted on the portal www.ss.com an advertisement for the purchase of building materials, to which a representative of a certain enterprise responded. The seller asked for a 100% advance payment, and the buyer transferred more than 4,000 euros to the specified bank account. Contact with the company was no longer possible.
A criminal trial was initiated under Part 1 of Article 177 of the Criminal Law. Usually, scammers themselves place photos with relevant goods on the ad portal, offering to purchase them at a price below the market price. However, this case indicates that criminals can also respond to buyers’ advertisements, posing as representatives of companies registered both in Latvia and abroad.
A signal indicating that the seller intends to deceive is the inability to see the goods and pay at the time of receipt, since it is often indicated that they are abroad and will be delivered after receiving a deposit or prepayment.
Attracting potential buyers, scammers contact them by phone or email during the transaction.
The State Police urges to carefully evaluate the ads posted on the Internet and not to buy goods that could not be seen in reality before. Also, you should not make an advance payment until you are completely sure that a particular product is available and whether the latter is really owned by the seller.
It is possible that this case is not the only one, so residents affected by fraudulent activities are asked to inform the police by calling 110.
