A quarter more mobile app spending: $65 billion

TikTok generated $920 million in revenue in the first half of 2021 and its growth is only accelerating. New figures from researcher Sensor Tower show that consumers spent $65 billion on apps in the past six months.

This concerns the sum of in-app purchases, subscriptions and premium apps. Sensor Tower is one of the parties calculating reach and earnings for market research and benchmarking purposes.

TikTok makes money by selling virtual coins that users can donate to others.

Most of the earnings are in the gaming apps: $45 billion (+18%). The vast majority of other apps (85%) make their money from selling subscriptions.

Books apps have crossed the $1 billion mark for gross revenue for the first time.

The new research figures show a strikingly skewed picture in the cash flows. Apple, whose iOS has a market share of 27 percent, captures 64 percent of mobile revenue. Google, accounting for 73 percent market share with Android, accounts for 36 percent. Many times more is earned with iOS apps.

Sensor Tower shows here that TikTok and YouTube are the best performing apps on iOS, but do not play a significant role on Android. At least in terms of earnings.

Looking at the numbers of downloads, it soon becomes clear that Facebook has by far the largest reach. Marc Zuckerberg’s company ranks 2, 3, 4 and 6 in the top ten. Bytedance is included with two apps: TikTok and CapCut.
