Redmax, the first Dutch sports brand to obtain the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Appendix 6 certificate, is the first and exclusively in Europe to introduce a sustainable performance and outdoor sock line. Socks, why? Because this market also needs to be made more sustainable and there is still quite a bit of technical progress to be made here, they think at Redmax.
Team Redmax took on the ‘mission sustainable performance and outdoor socks’. FashionUnited called Redmax’s commercial director, Ronald Nelemans, about the new Redmax project. Durable performance and outdoor socks, why and why now?
Ronald Nelemans: “Within sports and fashion retail there is one product that everyone wears every day: socks. A bestselling product that is generally not sustainably produced and contains little to no technicalities. We wanted to change that. So two things had to be improved: firstly, the sock had to be durable and secondly, it had to have unique, technical functionalities that make a substantial contribution to wearing comfort.”
The sports brand achieved this as follows. For the development of the outdoor and performance socks was used. Ronald Nelemans: “We had already seen what the implementation of coffee yarns (these yarns contain more than 70 percent carbonized coffee) can mean for sports fashion – both in terms of sustainability and ultimate comfort. Coffee yarn naturally has a number of advantages that, when made into a sock, you will not find in a ‘normal sock’. It has a dry cool function, absorbs unpleasant (sweat) odors, offers UV protection and is breathable.”
The outdoor and performance socks come in three different versions – the crew, the quarter and the sneaker – and are suitable for sports from yoga, running, tennis and fitness to hiking and biking. However, the brand does not want to emphasize the performance side directly. Ronald Nelemans: “We especially want to highlight the sustainable aspect. Redmax has set itself the goal of creating a fully sustainable sports fashion collection by 2030. At the moment, 80 percent of our collection is sustainably developed. The addition of the sock line is another step towards our 2030 goal.
The fact that the performance and outdoor socks collection – certainly in the price category in which it is sold – contains many unique technical properties, is of course also a very important unique selling point. Ronald Nelemans: “We are always amazed at the ease with which people put on a ‘regular sock’ when they start exercising. A regular sock does not ventilate, does not absorb (sweat) odors and is certainly not always comfortable. Why would you want this when you can now also buy a sock in the same price category that has all the functions, is extremely comfortable and which is also sustainably produced?” We agree with that: we can’t find a reason.
Sports brand Redmax is part of the sports fashion company FashionPower. Redmax produces four women’s and men’s, regular and plus size collections per year and supplies various convenience channels as well as (sports) Retail. The unisex performance socks come in three different versions – the crew, quarter and sneaker and in the colors white, grey, navy and black and are available in sizes 31 to 46. The unisex outdoor sock comes in the crew, in the colors gray / black and black / gray is available from size 31 to 46. The socks are only available at Redmax/FashionPower.
