A giant panda science park will be established in Xi’an, the capital of the northwestern Shaanxi province, the world’s largest panda breeding and research center in China has announced.

The 73-acre park will be built in the Changan district of China’s big city. The park will be able to raise 50 giant pandas at a time. They will have a separate area for adult specimens, but from birth they will care for the animals by age group.

Scientific research, the protection of giant pandas, the maintenance of international relations, tourism and the promotion of panda culture play an important role in the operation of the park.

With the new panda center, they want to improve the breeding conditions of captive pandas and increase their existing panda population, as well as further promote giant pandas in the Qingling Mountains.

The number of giant pandas in captivity worldwide was 633 last year. Barely 2,000 pandas live freely in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and Shanxi provinces.

A new giant panda museum began operations in Sichuan Province, southwest China, a natural habitat for giant pandas.

Built in one year, the museum is still in trial mode, and its official opening is scheduled for January 1, 2021. The trial run has been scheduled for Tuesday’s International Panda Day, the Xinhua Chinese State News Agency.

The more than 7,000-square-foot museum is home to the Giant Panda Research Base in Chengdu. In addition to scientific education, the museum presents research to the public to protect giant pandas.

The world’s first giant panda museum was built in 1992 on the base. In addition to viewing historical records of giant pandas, the 880-square-foot facility provides information on the various details and habits of animal life, research on giant pandas, and the protection of the animal species.

The giant pandemic research base on Chengdu, which covers about a hundred hectares, was originally set up to help six sick giant pandas rescued in the 1980s. Since its inception, the facility has never captured wildlife, focusing its activities on breeding groomed animals. According to data on the official website of the base, the number of giant pandas living here by January 2017 had reached 176. It is the largest captive-breeding panda population in the world.

The number of pandas living in captivity was 548 last November, according to Chinese data, and less than two thousand pandas live in the wild, most of them in Sichuan and Shenzhi provinces.
