A night train in Finland is an easy and comfortable choice

Choose a night train when you want comfort

The night train in a sleeping car is the most comfortable way to cover long distances in the country. The night train is often a slower option than the day train, but the long night’s sleep in the horizontal plane while the train is towing across the country at a constant speed makes the journey go by much faster than other options.

Especially for long distances, the night train is a good option. For example, the train journey between Helsinki and Rovaniemi takes 12 hours, so there is an opportunity for a long night’s sleep during the journey.

In addition to standard sleeping cabins, there are also Connectable cabins intended for families and accessible disabled cabins. The width of the beds in the sleeping cabins varies between 75 and 80 centimeters, depending on the train type, and all cabins have air conditioning and cabin-specific temperature control. The cabins on the upper floor of the double-decker sleeping cars have their own toilet and shower, in the other cabins they are located in the corridor.

The double sleeping cabins are compact, but offer everything you need.

The cabins have space for storing luggage, and depending on the train, you can store your suitcase either under the bed or in a storage compartment built into the wall. For passengers, clean sheets, a small towel and a bottle of water are waiting on the beds. You should pack a sleep mask and earplugs from your own back. The cabins also have a sink and a mirror cabinet.

Get your tickets early

The price tag of a night train journey spent in a sleeping car can be quite expensive according to many perceptions, but considering the comfort, a sleeping car is a fairly affordable option.

The cheapest sleeping places are purchased about two months before the trip, i.e. at the start of the sales period for VR economy tickets. Then, for example, you can get a night train ticket between Helsinki and Oulu for about 50 euros one way (price revised in February 2020).

When buying a ticket, the customer can choose a sleeping place in either a male or female cabin or, when traveling with a familiar travel companion, in their own sleeping cabin. Seats are also available, which, depending on the offer, may be the same price as a sleeper, so when buying a ticket, you should always check the price of a sleeper before making a purchase decision.

Take it easy before the trip

You can get to the night train like any other train, i.e. it is enough to arrive a moment before the start of the journey. If you want to find your seat in peace before the train departs, it is safest to arrive at the platform 10–15 minutes before the start of the journey.

All carriages have showers, so you can leave showering on the night train if you wish. A place to sleep can be found in the carriage section of the train in the same way as a place to sit on a regular day train.

Your own sink and mirror cabinet make evening and morning tasks easier.

If you are traveling alone and have reserved a bed in a male or female cabin, leave the cabin door open or at least unlocked when you first arrive in the cabin. The conductor knows the passenger situation of each cabin, so if no one arrives to accompany you before the conductor, you can ask him if you are getting a travel companion.

enjoy the trip

The sleeping cabin doors are lockable and each cabin has its own cabin key for each passenger. The night train journey is spent comfortably reading a book, watching a movie and, of course, sleeping. Especially on bright summer nights, the entire beauty of Finland opens up from the windows during the night train journey in the south-north direction.

The restaurant car serves night train passengers, but can be very crowded at times. If you plan to work on a laptop and the working position in the sleeping cabin does not feel ergonomically comfortable, you should use the available seats on the train.

Interconnecting family cabins are also available. The interior and color scheme of the sleeping cabin varies depending on the train.

Night trains often get quiet at midnight at the latest, and you should respect other passengers’ sleep by being quiet. Depending on the destination, the train may arrive at the destination in the early hours of the morning, when it is worth noting, especially when moving through the corridors, that the vast majority of passengers may still be sleeping.

The night trains continue their journey on schedule, which is why the stops at some stations are significantly longer than at others. Also compared to day trains, the stops are longer.
