A new era begins – Harley-Davidson Sportster S demo – Car-Engine

Only the circle shape is classic: Harley has designed a modern TFT display unit for the novelty. Button forest on a Sportster? It was previously unthinkable, but due to technical advances it is now inevitable. You can even choose a backrest passenger seat from the long extralist

The Soviets shot Sputnik 1 in 1957, frisbee was born as a game, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time. In the motorcycle industry, this year was about the birth of the Harley-Davidson Sportster series. True to its name, Anno was a distinctly sporty model, and because it was easy to fall in love with its shape, sales success did not lag behind, by 1970 it was already Harley’s most popular model, ousting Electra Glide from number one on the in-house list! Not only did the Sportster retain its distinctive style not only after years but also after many decades, and they achieved massive market success with the series, which has evolved into a whole model family over time, when sportiness was no longer typical of it with the utmost benevolence. That’s why it could have been a painful decision to remove the air-cooled, classic Sportsters from Harley’s European range due to Euro-5 standards – Iron and Forty-Eight are still available in the US, but let’s not have any illusions, these versions are nice too they will slowly disappear.

Balloon tires make a big impression on the new Harley’s chunky, rugged engine

So the future lies in the all-new Sportster S, with which Harley clearly aims to reach a young audience. It is not easy to categorize the machine either, as it is sporty for a cruiser and too chunky and cruising for a bike, but it is certainly a spectacular engine that, apart from its name, refers to any of its predecessors at most with its small tank. A conceptual change has already taken place, as the 228 kg model is based on a modern cross-linked steel tubular structure instead of the traditional cradle frame, and the steering neck is practically held by the block. True to the brand’s custom, the resource is one of the defining elements of the design, but Harley fans may notice at first glance that the classic 45-degree cylinder angle isn’t the same either. For a traditionally belt-driven novelty, the Revolution Max block with 60-degree cylindrical variable valve actuation is used, as is the case with the Pan America tour enduro. The tuning of the 1252 cc, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, forged piston block is quite different from that of the World Traveler, with a peak output of “only” 121 horsepower, which is amazingly high in the Sportster, as the run-out Forty-Eight is air-cooled. The 1200 Evolution block produces just over 60 horsepower. And of course we haven’t been used to a Harley resource spinning nearly 10,000 a minute!

Undoubtedly, the exhaust is one of the most spectacular points of the model!

Milwaukee engineers were not satisfied with this, they wanted to create something permanent in terms of brakes and chassis, for which Brembo supplies radial-mounted calipers, while the spring elements are named after the Japanese Showa. The 43 mm inverted fork and Piggyback spring member have only 92 and 51 mm spring travel, respectively – we look forward to the comfort level in practice. Of course, the designers did everything they could to make the model comfortable for more than just one-of-a-kind bikers, so they then offered two types of footrests for the newcomer, and as expected, the clutch and brake levers were adjustable. While extras like heated grips and a backrest passenger seat clearly increase comfort, the Sportster S wants to be primarily a high-tech engine, at least with its instrument cluster for sure. The multi-configurable color 4.3-inch TFT display can even display navigation on the phone via Bluetooth, and even paired with a communication system, you can receive or make calls on the go. Nor is it incidental that while Sportsters have always been characterized by minimalist instrumentation, the driver can already retrieve information such as tire pressure and battery voltage. Interestingly, in addition to the 3 pre-set travel programs, there are 2 individual programmable modes for adjusting torque output, engine brake and throttle response, as well as controlling the ABS and tilt-sensitive traction control levels via a 6-axis IMU. Harley also thinks of those who want to draw on asphalt with 180mm wide Dunlop tires so the traction control can be turned off completely.
