A fire broke out in the territorial waters of Sweden on the passenger ship Stena Scandica.

The ship runs between Ventspils (Latvia) and Nynäshamn (Sweden), there are 300 people on board, reports Rus. Delphi.

“We have warned all ships and helicopters in the vicinity that it may be necessary to rescue people,” said Lisa Mörning, spokeswoman for the Swedish Waterways Department.

“There is smoke, but no open fire. The crew is cooling the fire area with water,” said fire officer Jonas Franzen, adding that the fire was caused by a refrigerator located on the car deck.

According to Franzen, a couple of people from the ship have been evacuated, but the decision on a full-scale evacuation should be made by the head of the rescue operation.
