India has ordered a senior Canadian diplomat to leave the country. Hours earlier, Ottawa had expelled an Indian diplomat over the Indian government’s possible involvement in the murder of a Sikh activist in Canada. TASR took over the report from the AFP agency.

The expulsion decision reflects concern over Canadian diplomats’ interference in India’s internal affairs and their involvement in anti-India activities, India’s foreign ministry said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a special session of parliament on Monday that Ottawa has credible evidence from intelligence agencies that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A Sikh activist and Canadian citizen was murdered on June 18 outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced that the government had taken immediate action on the matter and expelled a high-ranking Indian diplomat, the head of India’s intelligence service in Canada.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday rejected the Canadian accusation, calling it “absurd and motivated”.

India has previously designated Nijjara as a wanted terrorist who supported the creation of an independent state of Khalistan for the Sikh religious minority. Nijjar has denied his involvement in carrying out terror attacks in India.

The only Indian state where they have a majority representation is Punjab. Their religious center is the city of Amritsar. Canada has the largest Sikh community outside Punjab.
