A case was opened against a high-ranking Russian official for inciting the military in Crimea to join Russia

A high-ranking official of the Russian Armed Forces forced several dozen Ukrainian servicemen to side with the enemy during the armed conflict.

Prosecutors of the Prosecutor General’s Office have initiated criminal proceedings against the Deputy Commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Russian Armed Forces for inciting treason (Part 4 of Article 27, Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

According to the investigation, a high-ranking official of the RF Armed Forces in March 2014 deliberately persuaded servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to commit treason in order to damage Ukraine’s defense capabilities and state security, as well as to change the borders of our state.

“Threatening the use of physical violence and weapons by the Armed Forces of the occupying country, he forced several dozen Ukrainian servicemen to side with the enemy during the armed conflict,” the statement said.

The maximum sanction for committing this particularly serious crime against the foundations of national security of Ukraine provides for imprisonment for up to 15 years.

Chronology of Russia’s occupation of Crimea

  • Russia occupied the Ukrainian Crimea, introducing the military into the territory of the peninsula and organizing in March 2014 a pseudo-referendum on its self-determination. The self-proclaimed Crimean authorities stated that 96.77% of the peninsula’s residents were in favor of Crimea’s accession to Russia.
  • On March 18, 2014, the so-called “agreement” on the admission of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation was signed in the Kremlin.
  • Western countries did not recognize the annexation of Crimea and imposed sanctions against Russia.
  • The Verkhovna Rada officially announced the beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea on February 20, 2014.
