A better Xbox Series S, Series X Pro and Playstation 5 Pro are coming

The current generation of consoles has not even celebrated its first birthday yet (this is planned for November 10 at Microsoft and on the 12th at Sony), but both mentioned “parents” are already thinking about other descendants. Chronologically, the following could appear:

Improved Xbox Series S

Two years after the publication of “eSka”, ie at the end of 2022, an innovated model could arrive. Its SoC will be manufactured on a 6nm (ie EUV) TSMC process (instead of the current immersion 7nm). While the current model has only 20 active CUs (graphic blocks) out of a total of 24 for higher yields, the novelty should have 24 active CUs. This, together with the higher frequencies, should offer up to 50% higher performance. We can easily calculate that a purely increase in the number of CUs can shift the power by a maximum of 20%, so the increase in cycles would have to be 25% (to achieve that extra 50%: 1.20 × 1.25). The GPU of the current model runs at 1.57 GHz, so the novelty would run at 1.95-2.00 GHz. More or less.

Under normal circumstances, such changes would not make sense. New models were usually cheaper to manufacture and had lower consumption to save on cooling, power and volume. In this case, however, Microsoft’s plan should not be to cut costs, as the new model will not replace the original. It will be a supplement for a slightly higher price range ($ 349), while the current model ($ 299) will be reduced to $ 249. Microsoft intends to cover a wider price range.

Improved Xbox Series X

The successor of the current “iXk” is to be expected later, in 2023. No further information is known yet, but depending on whether the goal is to reduce production costs or increase performance, either a 6nm or 5nm process can be deployed. Because this is more than two years away, Microsoft may not yet be definitively determined, although the design of the chip as such – if there is any architectural change – will probably already be given.

Playstation 5 Pro

In contrast, what it will look like with the updated version of the Playstation 5 is already known. It will be an extension of the existing offer (rather than in the Xbox Series S segment) rather than a replacement. There is a premium (= more expensive) solution in preparation, which will target 8K resolution and the price can be expected in the range of $ 599-699. It is expected that this product will be equipped with a SoC with a TDP of around 300 watts and, with a view to the release planned around the period 2023-2024, probably also with updated versions of the graphics and processor architecture. It could be a derivative of RDNA 3 and Zen 3/4. It makes no sense to consider an older than 5nm TSMC process.
