A 90-year-old woman from Zlín lost more than 200,000 CZK and jewelry during the theft

According to the police, a 90-year-old woman from Zlín lost more than 200,000 crowns and gold jewelry during a theft on Wednesday morning. They were taken from her residence by a woman who broke into the apartment under the pretext of checking the waste. If convicted of theft, the perpetrator faces up to five years in prison, police spokeswoman Monika Kozumplíková said in a press release on Thursday. The police are asking for the public’s help in the search for the thief.

According to the spokesperson, an unknown woman who spoke Czech poorly knocked on the door of the senior woman’s apartment at 10:45 a.m. “She told her that she came to check the waste. The 90-year-old woman let the strange woman into the apartment, where she stayed for about ten minutes. They spent most of the time in the kitchen, where the woman alternately ran cold and hot water and pretended to check something,” said Kozumplíková.

After the woman left, the elderly woman noticed that she had a drawer in the living room ajar, which had been closed before. “She discovered that her things were mixed up in a drawer and the money she kept in them had disappeared from her envelopes. After opening another drawer, she saw that her gold jewelry had also disappeared. She reported the incident to the police. She lost an amount exceeding 200 thousand crowns in cash and the value of her jewelry at 100,000 crowns,” said Kozumplíková.

Detectives welcome the public’s help in investigating the circumstances of the theft. “The woman was supposed to be around 40 years old and was wearing a light-colored jacket. She spoke Czech poorly, she was apparently a foreigner,” the spokeswoman said. If anyone saw such a woman on Wednesday between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. on Benešová nábreží in Zlín, or can provide more detailed information about her actions or description, the police ask them to call 158.
