Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who received Nobel Peace Prize for his struggle against apartheid, died December 26 in Cape Town.

He died at the age of 91. This was reported The Washington Post.

According to Roger Friedman, a representative of the Intellectual Property Fund of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the cause of death was complications from cancer.

Archbishop Tutu was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997. He has been hospitalized several times in the last few years due to infections associated with cancer treatment.

UNIAN reference. Desmond Mpilo Tutu, the son of a schoolteacher and laundress, was born on October 7, 1931, in a small gold-mining town in the Transvaal, in the heart of South Africa. He wanted to become a doctor, but his family could not afford medical education.

After graduating from the University of South Africa in 1954, he followed in his father’s footsteps, teaching in high school.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in theology and a master’s degree in theology from King’s College London, Archbishop Tutu taught for several years in South Africa and worked in England as an administrator at the Theological Education Foundation, which managed World Council of Church scholarship funds.

He was appointed the first black Anglican dean of Johannesburg in 1975, bishop of Lesotho a year later and secretary general of the South African Council of Churches in 1978.

He used his position in the Council to become a high-ranking representative of racial equality and non-violence. As riots spread across the country since 1984, his office at the Hotso House in central Johannesburg became the nerve center of the liberation movement, which housed many anti-apartheid organizations, including trade unions and grassroots NGOs. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts.
